Punding.

I would like to thank Mike for making me aware of the existence of this word.

Punding is a term that was coined originally to describe complex prolonged, purposeless, and stereotyped behavior in chronic amphetamine users …
… compulsive fascination with and performance of repetitive, mechanical tasks

- building hundreds of small wooden boxes
- trying but failing to systematically remove the entire contents of all the drawers and shelves in the home and sort through all their contents.

This is scarily like me, of course minus the amphetamine part. I often find myself looking at my desk, noticing things out of place, putting them in random drawers(Most likely due to my Small OCD with the tidiness of my desk). The problem with this is that later during a bored spell, I feel compelled to organize my desk drawers, only to find that they look almost as messy as they did before I started! Is there a cure for this? Would this be considered an illness? Can someone tell me, why must I feel compelled to clean my drawers, book cases, and T.V. stand, when all I do is put the same items that were already in there in a completely random way, not making any improvements at all?

I wonder if there are any groups dedicated to this problem..

It is a genetic disorder. Your Uncle is similar and to an extent so am I. It has never bothered me except that it means that I cannot be an efficient/productive programmer in a GUI environment.
